Supreme Court Advises BJP Minister Vijay Shah To Speak Responsibly Amid Controversial Remarks On Colonel Sofiya Qureshi

The Supreme Court of India, on May 15, declined immediate intervention in the FIR registered against BJP Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his controversial remarks targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The FIR was filed following the Madhya Pradesh High Court's suo motu direction, and the matter is now set for further hearing tomorrow.

During the urgent hearing of Shah’s plea, Senior Advocate Vibha Makhija highlighted that the minister had already issued an apology, stating that his comments were misunderstood and misrepresented by the media. However, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai emphasized the importance of responsibility in public statements made by individuals holding public office.

"A person holding such an office is expected to maintain such a decree...every sentence uttered by a minister has to be with responsibility," the CJI orally observed.

The Supreme Court bench, which also included Justice AG Masih, advised Shah to seek relief from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, stating, "Go and apply to HC. We will have it tomorrow."

The issue originated from Shah’s remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who, alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, became a notable figure during ‘Operation Sindoor,’ a military operation against terrorist sites in Pakistan. Shah’s statement, however, attracted controversy after he allegedly referred to Qureshi in a manner perceived as derogatory.

His controversial comment was quoted as, "Jinhone humari betiyon ke sindoor ujade the… humne unhiki behen bhej kar ke unki aisi ki taisi karwayi," which translates to, "Those who wiped out the sindoor of our sisters... we avenged them by sending their sister to destroy them."

Following public backlash, Shah posted a video on his X account (formerly Twitter), where he publicly apologized for his remarks. Despite his apology, the legal proceedings continue, with the Supreme Court maintaining that it will not pass any interim orders in the matter for now.

The next hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.
