The Supreme Court on Tuesday sternly rejected the one-week extension sought by Karnataka MLA and former minister Vinay Kulkarni to submit documents against the Karnataka government's plea to cancel his bail. The case pertains to the murder of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda, in which Kulkarni is an accused.
The matter was heard by a bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma, who granted Vinay Kulkarni only one day to produce additional material on record.

"It shall be open for the respondents to place or submit any documents on record during the day or during the hearing tomorrow," the Supreme Court said in its order.
Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Vinay Kulkarni, sought a week's time, saying the matter involved Vinay Kulkarni's Article 21 rights (right to life and personal liberty). He further said the state had not filed all the documents that were earlier placed before the trial court. Singh argued that even a slight delay would not harm the process.
"We have no time in this… I am not saying give me 4-6 weeks. Whatever reasonable time I get… If I don't get even a day's time to file the documents… then hand it over next week," Maninder Singh argued before the bench.

However, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the Karnataka government, opposed the request and highlighted Vinay Kulkarni's past conduct to oppose the extension.
Dismissing the plea, Justice Karol firmly said:
"We are going to treat you very unfairly and harshly. We are adjourning the matter for a day."
The court then listed the matter for hearing the next day, giving Vinay Kulkarni's counsel only 24 hours to produce any relevant documents.
The bench also reprimanded a lawyer from the previous hearing who had sought adjournment claiming he did not have his black coat with him as he was in his native village on leave. Interestingly, the lawyer was wearing a black coat during the hearing and later clarified that he had borrowed it.

Justice Sanjay Karol remarked, "You put a senior lawyer to great embarrassment yesterday… and you logged in three times… it only says a lot about the lawyer, forget about the clients… never do this in future."
The state government of Karnataka has sought the cancellation of bail of Vinay Kulkarni on the grounds of witness tampering. Vinay Kulkarni was arrested in 2020 in the murder case of Yogesh Gowda and was later released on bail in 2021.
