The President of India has officially nominated Justice Surya Kant, a judge of the Supreme Court, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), effective from May 14, 2025. This announcement was made through a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, in exercise of powers under Section 3(2)(b) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

As per the long-established convention, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court is traditionally appointed to this prestigious position. Justice Surya Kant will now take over from Justice BR Gavai, who will assume office as the Chief Justice of India on May 14, after the retirement of the current CJI, Sanjiv Khanna, on May 13, 2025.
In his current role, Justice Surya Kant serves as the Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, contributing significantly to the judicial system's efforts to provide legal services to the marginalized sections of society.
