Plea in Supreme Court Seeks Removal of Derogatory Social Media Posts on Judiciary After Nishikant Dubey's Remarks

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea next week demanding the removal of derogatory content circulating on social media against the judiciary. This follows controversial remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey targeting the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.

The matter was raised before a bench led by Justice BR Gavai by Advocate Narender Mishra, who emphasized the urgent need for action. The plea highlights that after the Supreme Court's directions regarding Presidential assent to Bills and intervention in the Waqf Amendment Act, Dubey made statements against the Court and CJI which were widely shared on social media.

“The MP has said CJI Khanna is responsible for the civil wars in India,” Advocate Mishra told the bench.

The plea pointed out that offensive and disrespectful content, including tags like "this is a k***a" and "this is regulated by Shariah," is being spread across platforms, seriously damaging the dignity of the judiciary.

“Social media is full of abusive content against the Supreme Court. Despite letters to the Attorney General and Solicitor General, no action has been taken,” Advocate Mishra added.

The petitioner requested the Court to direct social media platforms to take down the videos and posts immediately.

“It is hurting the Court... government is not taking any action... this is different from earlier times,” Mishra stressed during the hearing.

After considering the submissions, Justice BR Gavai assured that the matter will be taken up in the coming week.

In a related development, an Advocate-on-Record has also written to the Attorney General seeking permission to begin criminal Contempt Proceedings Urged Against Nishikant Dubey for Statements on Supreme Court and CJI.
