A request has been submitted to the Attorney General for India, R Venkataramani, seeking permission to begin criminal contempt proceedings against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. This request follows comments made by Dubey targeting the Supreme Court of India and the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna.
According to the letter submitted by an Advocate-on-Record, Dubey allegedly said that the "Supreme Court is taking the country towards anarchy" and that "Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna is responsible for the civil wars taking place in the country." These statements were made in response to the Supreme Court setting timelines for the President and Governors to act on pending Bills.

The letter further stated that Dubey made communally sensitive remarks while opposing the Court's involvement in petitions challenging the Waqf Amendment Act. The Advocate claimed that these remarks were deeply derogatory and provocative, especially since they targeted the top judicial authority in the country.
“He recklessly attributes national unrest to the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, thus scandalising the highest judicial office in the country and attempting to provoke public dissent, outrage and possible unrest,”
– the letter submitted to the Attorney General stated.
The complaint has been filed under Section 15(1)(b) of the Contempt of Courts Act, which allows any person to seek the Attorney General's permission to initiate criminal contempt proceedings before the Supreme Court.

The letter emphasized that such baseless and inflammatory remarks not only undermine the dignity of the judiciary but also pose a serious threat to its independence and credibility. The petition urges strict action against the MP to uphold the respect and authority of the judicial system.
“Such comments, without any foundation, are a grave attack on the integrity and independence of the judiciary,”
– the petition stated.
Following the widespread backlash, BJP National President JP Nadda distanced the party from the remarks, stating that these were Dubey’s personal opinions and not the official position of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He made it clear that the BJP does not agree with such statements.
