Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai openly criticized the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for refusing to host a farewell for Justice Bela M Trivedi, who marked her last working day at the Supreme Court. The ceremonial bench, held in her honor, saw CJI Gavai expressing disappointment over the SCBA's stand.
"I believe in speaking straightly, the Association ought not to have taken such a stand," remarked CJI Gavai, emphasizing transparency.

Despite the SCBA's decision, senior members like President Kapil Sibal and Vice President Rachna Srivastava attended the event. CJI Gavai appreciated their presence, stating, "I am grateful to Mr. Kapil Sibal and Ms. Rachna Srivastava. Their presence, despite the Association's stand, shows respect for Justice Trivedi."

Justice Augustine George Masih, present at the ceremony, supported CJI Gavai’s view, emphasizing that traditions must be upheld. He stated, "Good traditions should continue always."

Justice Trivedi's career was marked by her reputation for fairness and strictness. She had ordered a CBI inquiry against lawyers over a fake SLP issue and maintained a conservative approach in granting relief. Her decisions, especially in politically sensitive cases, sometimes led to friction within the bar.
"She never moulded relief to suit popular sentiment and had the courage to displease people," - Solicitor General Tushar Mehta
Several senior advocates, including Attorney General R Venkataramani, highlighted her unwavering commitment to integrity. Venkataramani recalled her strong stance on the caste-based reservation policy in the EWS case, appreciating her clear and bold opinions.
In her farewell speech, Justice Trivedi expressed gratitude and emphasized the diversity of the judiciary. "Judges come to the Supreme Court from different backgrounds, carrying their own idea of justice. This polyvocality is a strength," she remarked.
Justice Bela Trivedi, who began her judicial career in Gujarat in 1995, served in the Gujarat High Court before being appointed to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021. Her official retirement date is June 9, 2025.
